Top Gadgets of 2018 for Court Reporters

December 2, 2018 By Lynette Mueller Leave a Comment

The holidays are upon us! These awesome must-have gadgets may be just what you’re looking for this year for your favorite court reporter or legal professional. These are my latest and greatest picks this year and just a click away for that favorite person on your list! Whether you’re on the naughty list or the nice list, remember to pick up a little something for yourself while you’re at it.

Some of the following made my list last year, but they’re just so darn awesome that they landed on the list again this year.  So, hold on for “deer” life as I “present” to you my favorite gadgets of 2018.  I hope “yule” love them as much as I do.  Enjoy!

  1. Automatic Pro Connected Car Adapter: This handy gadget has realtime location data about who’s driving your car.  I’ve been using this device for over a year now and am absolutely loving it!  I am using an app called IFTTT to automatically generate a Google spreadsheet to keep track of my work miles. No more mileage logs for me where I have to handwrite all the data.  This adapter plugs into almost any car to provide unlimited monitoring with zero fees.  You may even connect your car to your Echo, your smart thermostat, or any other part of your digital life.  This product works only in the United States.
  2. DYMO LabelWriter:  This labeler is my all-time favorite gadget.  Just upload your company logo, add your contact information, and print a professional-looking label for every transcript that heads out the door.  My labeler is connected to a dedicated computer.  But I have no worries about keeping my contacts up to date, because I utilize Apple’s iCloud.  When I effect a change or update in my address book on one computer, it then syncs on all computers, so my contacts are always up to date and available no matter which computer or device I happen to be using.  I also have created a customized exhibit sticker with my logo.  No more worrying about ordering exhibit stickers because I create them on-the-go.  The product features of the DYMO labeler are many: create and print address, shipping, file, folder, and barcode labels; print USPS approved DYMO stamps postage directly from your desktop, uses thermal printing technology — no expensive ink or toner needed.
  3. Tile: I’ve been using the Tile for a few years now to keep track of my most important items. Think your writer, wallet, keys — you get the idea. Quickly find items that you seem to always misplace with Tile.  I have given these as gifts before, and they’ve been a huge hit!  Can’t find your car keys?  Not sure where you placed your phone?  Or what if my equipment gets stolen?  Quickly find your lost items using Tile’s Bluetooth tracking device.  If your Tile is within the 100-foot Bluetooth range, it will play a loud tune until you find it. Keep the app running in the background, and Tile will automatically remember the last time and place you last had your item so you know where to start looking.  Tile is available for both Android and Apple devices! The New Pro & Mate now come with replaceable batteries.
  4. Peerless TrackR Quartz Blue Ballpoint Pen:  This gadget is on my list this year. I think it would be a great addition to my gadget collection. Please tell Santa this is a must-have! The Cross Peerless TrackR was designed for those who want to enjoy the luxury of a Cross pen without the worry of it getting lost, left behind, or stolen. Within it is a tracking device that lets you keep tabs on your pen’s whereabouts through a suite of tracking features. It also comes with a lifetime mechanical guarantee!
  5. Anker 10W Wireless Charger, Qi-Certified Wireless Charging Pad: This is one of the best gadgets ever! No more cords for me when I need to charge my iPhone X. Fast charge mode enables wireless charging up to two times faster. (Metal attachments or credit cards will interfere with charging.) Some of its unique features are as follows: LED indicators, non-slip pad, temperature control, surge protection, and more!
  6. iRobot Roomba 780:  Be productive at home and do other things you’d rather be doing than vacuuming! We fondly call our Roomba “Alice,” like the housekeeper from The Brady Bunch. Now if only we had a real Alice! The features of the Roomba: iAdapt multi-room navigation uses a full suite of sensors to navigate and adapt to your changing home; room-to-room cleaning with the included Virtual Wall Lighthouse beacons; three-stage cleaning system agitates, brushes, and suctions floors; conveniently scheduled up to seven times per week or just press Clean on the robot; automatically docks and recharges.
  7. AirFly: Wish you could listen to in-flight TV with your AirPods? Want to hear the gym cardio machine’s TV audio with your wireless headphones? Now you can, thanks to AirFly – a tiny device that connects wireless headphones to wired-audio jacks on planes, in fitness center, and anywhere else wired headphones were previously required. Just pair your wireless headphones with AirFly, plug it into the headphone jack, and you’re ready. It’s just that easy! AirFly stays charged for eight hours and includes a USB charging cable and travel pouch. The built-in battery lasts up to eight hours and recharges via USB.
  8. Apple AirPods: I love to do away with cords when I can. The Apple AirPods made it into my gadget collection this past summer. I was looking for a good option to monitor live audio during a job without a cord hanging from my ear. I used the AirFly to connect to my writer, which it did fine. Unfortunately, at this time they are unusable for this purpose because of audio feedback.  That being said, the AirPods are an amazing product and hopefully one day the technology can work for monitoring of audio during the deposition. These earbuds can be used for when I want to edit over the lunch hour or on breaks and I wish to spot-check my audio.  They are slim and quite unobtrusive. No one can even tell I have them in! They can be used with all your devices. After a one-tap setup, the AirPods are automatically on and always connected. You will get up to five hours of listening time on one charge.
  9. HGM-2 Microphone: This handy little microphone is packed with lots of features and has extreme pickup range and quality in addition to a built-in battery tester. The court reporter who has this mic can be assured you will have a worry-free day of crystal clear audio.  The HGM-2 utilizes a high-power battery that lasts 600 hours and allows the microphone to actually track voices up to 75 feet away while filtering out background noise. I use this microphone attached to my Luminex so that I can monitor audio live for those low-talking witnesses and attorneys!
  10. Amazon Echo Dot: I received the Echo Dot last year. It truly has a wide variety of uses and can be used throughout your office or home. Echo Dot is a hands-free, voice-controlled device that uses Alexa to play music, control smart home devices, make calls, send and receive messages, provide information, read the news, set alarms, read audiobooks from Audible, control Amazon Video on Fire TV, and more. When editing my transcripts, I ask Alexa to verify spellings for me so that I don’t have to take my hands off the keyboard; thus, making me much more productive. If a court reporter can keep their hands on the keyboard, it saves time and effort for sure. Other uses for the Echo Dot are as follows: Connects to speakers or headphones through Bluetooth or 3.5 mm stereo cable to play music from Amazon Music, Spotify, Pandora, iHeartRadio, and TuneIn. Apple Music is coming mid-December! Play music simultaneously across Echo devices and speakers connected via cable with multi-room music. There are many skills available for Alexa. If you want to find out if you or your children are on Santa’s Naughty or Nice list, enable the skill on Alexa and find out quickly!
  11. Peeps: This gadget is another one that is on my Wish List! It’s gotten rave reviews online. It’s a revolutionary and patented invisible carbon formula that safely and easily cleans your glasses, leaving your lenses as clean as the day you got them. This gadget is compact, lightweight, and pocket-sized, which makes it a perfect companion for travel! Unlike disposable chemical-filled wipes, the carbon technology is all natural.

There you have it — my Top Gadgets for the Holidays 2018.  Happy gifting! Oh, and remember to pick up a little something for yourself while you’re shopping.

My Favorite Court Reporting Gadget

February 18, 2014 By Lynette Mueller Leave a Comment

It’s Court Reporting & Captioning Week!  Each year the National Court Reporting Association honors the unique professions of court reporting and captioning by showcasing to the public the large impact court reporters have had, and do have, on capturing history for posterity, as well as the wonderful services captioners make available to help better the lives for millions of Americans who are deaf and hard of hearing by providing captioning in realtime for live sporting and theater events, church services, movie houses, and many other venues.

In honor of this special week, I’d like to share with my colleagues and legal professionals my favorite gadget that I utilize in my court reporting business. A “gadget” is generally thought of as perhaps a mechanical device; however, I am broadening the meaning of “gadget” to include a device that is perhaps unique, not necessarily mechanical, and helps me be productive with my court reporting work.

I use each gadget for a specific purpose — and that is for productivity! Productivity is defined as: “the quality, state, or fact of being able to generate, create, enhance, or bring forth goods and services.”

I know there are many of you out there that feel like there is too much to do and not enough time! As busy professionals, we all are constantly juggling family, work, and other commitments. I understand each of you has multiple roles — spouse, parent, cook, breadwinner, whatever. You need extra hands!

I am constantly striving to find new ways to aid me in my quest to complete a job more efficiently. After all, who doesn’t want more time to spend with family and friends; right?

My iPhone and iPad are my top go-to products to help me with my court reporting business and are a tremendous asset for productivity. As I’ve written in a previous blog post: “The smartphone has become an essential tool for every court reporter and ultimately eliminates the need for other gadgets one used to traditionally rely on in completing certain functions/tasks to get your transcript out the door. My smartphone of choice has revolutionized the way I do business and increases my efficiency and productivity immeasurably. Utilizing one intuitive device is the preferable and superior choice over multiple devices. In addition, the size of a mobile device conveniently and effortlessly fits into a pocket or a handbag.”

The smartphone is, indeed, very powerful; but there are a few gadgets that I rely on when I’m in the deposition setting and/or the courtroom. The JCR asked me to write an article last year about my top gadgets. When I first received the request, I was, like, “How am I going to come up with 10 gadgets? I don’t think I really use that many.” Well, when I sat down to compose the article, it made me realize how many gadgets I really do have in my little arsenal. Oh, my gosh, I was a monster with the gadgets!  That being said, I am going to concentrate on my number-one gadget in this article — the iPhone/iPad.

Many of you may already utilize a tablet or iPad in your day-to-day worklife. There are many ways to use the iPad/iPhone in the deposition and/or courtroom setting as well. I recently upgraded to the iPad Air. For Father’s Day last year, I gave my husband the iPad Mini. I swear, sometimes I should stealthily “borrow” it from him. I definitely love the smaller footprint and feel it would have some benefits over the full-size iPad.

  • I created an iPhone/iPad app for my business called Omega OnTheGo. Within the app, there is a Transcript Order Form where attorneys may fill out the form and either use their finger or a stylus to sign the form. That way, there’s never a question whether the attorney ordered the transcript. The form is automatically emailed to them after the Submit button is clicked. Currently, the app is no longer available for download for iPhone, but you may still download the Android version.
  • If one doesn’t want to go to the expense of app creation, there are other ways to accomplish the same goal. Simply create a form within a PDF signing application and an email can be sent from the app. If you have a website, add a Transcript Order Form to your site and access the form from your iPad at the end of the job. I utilize all of these methods because I want to ensure I get paid for the work I do for attorneys and legal professionals. Having the attorney take specific action regarding the transcript order and having a copy forwarded to him reminds him he ordered and, then, there’s no confusion later about whether the transcript was indeed ordered or not. Leave the guesswork out of it and be certain.

Recently, I was working with some out-of-town attorneys. As sometimes is the case, after the deposition, they were in a rush to get to the airport. I thought, “No problem. I’ll just email the attorneys and ask them to fill out the TOF.”  It works perfectly and there is never a question about what the client ordered!

  • I am a Case CATalyst user.  Stenograph has a great app called ICVNet that I can utilize for realtime.  I do own netbooks that I utilize for clients to get the realtime feed.  The iPad is even more lightweight than the netbook.  I’m always a little hesitant to touch an attorney’s laptop to make adjustments to their settings if they are having difficulty hooking up. Having the extra netbooks and/or iPads alleviates all the guesswork, troubleshooting, and hassle.  Just hook up with your equipment that you’re familiar with and you’ll have a happy client as well.
  • Exhibit marking and retention of exhibits is an essential part of our role as a court reporter. As you all know, sometimes there are physical exhibits that the attorneys want to retain but it would be nice to have some indication of what it actually was so it could be reflected in the transcript. This happens quite frequently in some of the biomedical patent cases I work on from time to time. I take a pic of the physical exhibit and then utilize another app; such as, ScanLife, to turn the pic into a PDF to be attached to the transcript.  Best practice, of course, is to make a note in the index that the physical exhibit was retained by counsel.

The enumerated list above is just a snippet of the ways I use this amazing product, and there are many more.  My top recommended apps for the iPhone/iPad can be found on my website.  There is also an article on apps that was published in a previous issue of the JCR for more app recommendations.  If you are an Android user, I know there are lots of options for you as well in the Google Play store. If you do just a little bit of research, I know you will find a compatible app to the ones I have listed.

Using Technology to Its Full Potential

May 24, 2011 By Lynette Mueller Leave a Comment

Since the introduction and release of the iPhone on June 29, 2007, the attitudes about the device have changed dramatically among legal professionals. In a  recent article on Law.com, Patrick J. O’Connor, a partner in Harper, Mayer, Hagen, O’Connor, Albert & Dribin , a Miami law firm, says this: “At this point, technology is so integrated and essential to the practice of law that [gadgets are] looked at as standard issue.”

I have to admit that I readily and enthusiastically committed to the iPhone and its multiple features from the device’s inception. I feel it is an essential tool to aid me in my day-to-day business with paralegals and attorneys alike.

As we all know, technology is great when it works. Today I experienced an outage of my Internet service with my carrier that lasted for most of the day. Did I let that stop me from continuing on with the production of transcripts and uploading of my files to the Secure Online Repository? Indeed not!

When I upgraded to my iPad 2 a few months ago, I elected to add the feature of a personal hotspot (sometimes referred to as Internet tethering) on my mobile phone plan. So rather than bemoan the fact that I had no Internet this afternoon, I immediately decided to tether my iPhone with my MacBook Air! It worked like a charm and I was able to continue with my production of transcripts and uploading of my files. I was also able to continue answering my emails and Google some proper names for production of accurate transcripts. Taking advantage of technology is great!

Click on the image below for a short video tutorial on how to tether your iPhone with your computer. If you need help troubleshooting your personal hotspot, click here to review an article from Apple’s website.

Innovation

March 29, 2011 By Lynette Mueller Leave a Comment

Innovative – adjective, “Using or showing new ideas, methods, etc.”, according to thefreedictionary.com.

Omega Reporting (your Memphis court reporters) embrace and thrive on technology and find innovative ways to implement it every day. A lot of hard work, experience, and persistence goes into all aspects of our business; and the result impacts positively for our clients. The ability to have the cool technology is one thing; but being innovative is a high priority for us and, in turn, for our clients. Omega uses technology tools to solve everyday tasks and real-world problems today in order to help make your job easier.

The focus of Omega is clearly our clients and how we can provide the ultimate experience and value to them.  Our website, of course, highlights the advantages of working with us and offers information and resources to assist in daily tasks.  Click here to view our Client Center.

Online repositories have been available and widely used for several years to access transcripts at the click of a mouse.  i-Tran, Omega’s secure online repository, is innovative in that it is a cross-platform tool that may be utilized in any browser of your choice.

Gone forever are the days of returning home with the intention of catching up on deposition preparation, only to be frustrated that you can’t get on the repository because of downtime and/or you’re forced to use a PC and Internet Explorer!  i-Tran is the product of many development hours using web standards versus platform or browser standards. Again, being innovative in order to solve a specific user-identified issue encountered with other repositories. Feel free to use a PC, Mac, Google Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or any other browser of your choice to help you with your deposition prep at work, at home, or wherever your travels may take you!

Stay tuned for future blog posts that will highlight other innovative ways Omega uses technology to help you; such as, working with transcripts on your iPad.
