Reporters and Gadgets and Apps — Oh, my!

May 30, 2020 By Lynette Mueller Leave a Comment

The Tennessee Court Reporters Association asked me to be a speaker at their learning event on June 5, 2020. I will be presenting a seminar called Reporters and Gadgets and Apps — Oh, my!  The leaders of our association have determined that the learning event will be conducted via Zoom. I would encourage anyone looking for continuing education credit to sign up now and learn with your Tennessee colleagues!

This is the description of the seminar: Learn to be self-sufficient, productive, efficient, and courageous in your everyday professional life! Lynette will share the gadgets, apps, and other resources that assist her to meet many challenges that may arise in the deposition or courtroom setting. She will also talk about the workflow she uses after the job — work smarter, not harder! During this session, we will wind up with discussion from the audience and sharing other gadgets that have helped them along their “Yellow Brick Road.”

As you can tell from the seminar description, I was totally inspired by the beloved children’s novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, by Frank Baum. It’s been several years since I read the book. Of course, I had to re-watch the movie again to get even more inspired for the upcoming presentation.

“Toto, I have a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore!”

Dorothy, that lovable character from the Wizard of Oz, got it right with that famous quote. Her “new normal” in this beloved tale takes her on a journey filled with unusual characters and circumstances as she’s trying to search for happiness with her little dog.

There are definitely parallels that may be drawn for court reporters in this wonderful tale too. The COVID-19 pandemic has led a lot of us, I’m sure, to reference the quote, “I have a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore.”

Just as Dorothy took her first steps into the unfamiliar Land of the Munchkins and faced a world totally unfamiliar to her, we court reporters have had to regroup and rise to the challenge of figuring out smart ways to face our challenges in our new and unfamiliar world of remote reporting. Our clients looked to us to help them through the process of remote reporting, and we met and exceeded their expectations.

For some court reporters, the world of remote depositions was a daunting and overwhelming one. We court reporters are an intelligent and resilient lot in my opinion; and our profession did exactly what Dorothy did when she turned to Glinda the Good Witch of the North for guidance. This little girl from Kansas asked Glinda how she could go back home, where to go, and how to get to the Great Wizard of Oz in the Emerald City. The answer from Glinda? “Follow the Yellow Brick Road.”

Court reporters asked many questions regarding how best to continue working during the pandemic. They researched, researched, and researched some more for ways to keep on tapping the keys on the writers in order to keep the wheels of justice turning! Our national and state associations were there with us every step of the way, took us by the hand, answered our important questions, provided articles, and free and low-cost webinars teaching about the in’s and out’s of our strange new world.

Our associations are just as magical and beloved as Glinda and we should support them in any way, big or small, that we can. I would encourage all reporters to look inside their hearts (like the Tin Man) and really think about what you can do to make a difference for our profession and then reach out to your association leaders and volunteer your time and talent!

As everyone knows, Dorothy met three companions on her journey down the Yellow Brick Road: the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion. These four souls made their way down that Yellow Brick Road to the Emerald City and discovered the power of friendship, love, bravery, and wisdom along the way.

The Wizard of Oz near the end of the movie gave advice and gifts to each of the four companions. For the Scarecrow, the Wizard had this to say: “A baby has brains, but it doesn’t know much. Experience is the only thing that brings knowledge, and the longer you are on earth the more experience you are sure to get.”

One of my greatest accomplishments has been to become a court reporter. I have been a court reporter for many, many years and I’ve gained experience along my Yellow Brick Road that I happily share with my friends and colleagues. I am deeply humbled and honored when a colleague comes to me with questions about our profession and/or technology.

Here’s the advice of the Great Oz for the Cowardly Lion:  “You have plenty of courage, I am sure. All you need is confidence in yourself. There is no living thing that is not afraid when it faces danger. The true courage is in facing danger when you are afraid, and that kind of courage you have in plenty.“

We court reporters need to keep up with so much technological knowledge, and we need the courage of the Cowardly Lion to look within ourselves and know that we can conquer any of our fears; whether it be remote depositions, realtime, or marking exhibits electronically. It just takes a lot of practice and time to get up to speed with the latest resources and tools available to us. We have the brains, the heart, and the courage. We’ve got this!

Friday’s Fantastic Four

May 17, 2019 By Lynette Mueller Leave a Comment

Happy Friday!

Here is your weekly snippet of what I’m loving, learning, following, buying, and reading.

  1. “Never stop challenging yourself. The day you do, you’re falling behind.”

Motivational quotes are important for everyone — and especially for court reporters. They can be a way to relieve stressors experienced daily and can be a tool to help stay focused on the job at hand.

2. Motivation Quotes – Daily Quote

Motivation contains a set of inspirational thoughts and sayings that will urge you to take daily action throughout the day.

These quotes will guide and inspire you for any occasion! Set many daily reminders for yourself and share the uplifting quote of the day with your friends and family or use the image for Instagram or as a wallpaper.

Motivation contains hundreds of quotes with deep and rich meanings, with a continuous stream of new ones added daily!

  • Read through hundreds of quotes
  • Find motivational books
  • Save or share your quotes
  • Set motivational reminders throughout the day
  • Filter quotes by category

3. There are several factors when considering who to follow on your social media channels.

  • Incentives
  • Content
  • Influencers
  • Advice

I use several social media platforms and utilize each for a different purpose. This blog is where I will highlight who court reporters should consider following too.

My pick for this Friday’s Follow is the National Court Reporters Association on all of their social media platforms. It is especially gratifying for me to share this follow, as it is Celebrate Certification Month!

NCRA has designated May as Celebrate Certification Month. The month-long campaign is a way for its members to show pride in the certifications they have earned, are working to earn, or are intending to earn.

NCRA is the premier organization in the court reporting arena and shares the most up-to-date and technology-related information available! Their social media platforms include the following:

  • Instagram
  • Twitter
  • Website
  • Facebook
  • TheJCR.com

Click here for a great article on how you can keep informed about NCRA and the awesome information they share.

4. This block will be devoted to one of the most engaging Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, or Instagram posts as determined by those individuals who follow Omega Reporting.

This week’s post is, again, dedicated to Celebrate Certification Month!

I am so very proud of two court reporter colleagues from Memphis on earning their RDR certifications — Lisa Mayo and Candace Covey. Their story of how they encouraged each other and studied together to earn this most prestigious credential is one that every professional should read.

Click here for the full story.

As always, please post your comments about any of the material posted here and let me know what kind of content you’d be most interested in. If you like the content posted here, I’d love it if you’d share with other colleagues and encourage them to sign up!

Cheers!

Top Gadgets of 2018 for Court Reporters

December 2, 2018 By Lynette Mueller Leave a Comment

The holidays are upon us! These awesome must-have gadgets may be just what you’re looking for this year for your favorite court reporter or legal professional. These are my latest and greatest picks this year and just a click away for that favorite person on your list! Whether you’re on the naughty list or the nice list, remember to pick up a little something for yourself while you’re at it.

Some of the following made my list last year, but they’re just so darn awesome that they landed on the list again this year.  So, hold on for “deer” life as I “present” to you my favorite gadgets of 2018.  I hope “yule” love them as much as I do.  Enjoy!

  1. Automatic Pro Connected Car Adapter: This handy gadget has realtime location data about who’s driving your car.  I’ve been using this device for over a year now and am absolutely loving it!  I am using an app called IFTTT to automatically generate a Google spreadsheet to keep track of my work miles. No more mileage logs for me where I have to handwrite all the data.  This adapter plugs into almost any car to provide unlimited monitoring with zero fees.  You may even connect your car to your Echo, your smart thermostat, or any other part of your digital life.  This product works only in the United States.
  2. DYMO LabelWriter:  This labeler is my all-time favorite gadget.  Just upload your company logo, add your contact information, and print a professional-looking label for every transcript that heads out the door.  My labeler is connected to a dedicated computer.  But I have no worries about keeping my contacts up to date, because I utilize Apple’s iCloud.  When I effect a change or update in my address book on one computer, it then syncs on all computers, so my contacts are always up to date and available no matter which computer or device I happen to be using.  I also have created a customized exhibit sticker with my logo.  No more worrying about ordering exhibit stickers because I create them on-the-go.  The product features of the DYMO labeler are many: create and print address, shipping, file, folder, and barcode labels; print USPS approved DYMO stamps postage directly from your desktop, uses thermal printing technology — no expensive ink or toner needed.
  3. Tile: I’ve been using the Tile for a few years now to keep track of my most important items. Think your writer, wallet, keys — you get the idea. Quickly find items that you seem to always misplace with Tile.  I have given these as gifts before, and they’ve been a huge hit!  Can’t find your car keys?  Not sure where you placed your phone?  Or what if my equipment gets stolen?  Quickly find your lost items using Tile’s Bluetooth tracking device.  If your Tile is within the 100-foot Bluetooth range, it will play a loud tune until you find it. Keep the app running in the background, and Tile will automatically remember the last time and place you last had your item so you know where to start looking.  Tile is available for both Android and Apple devices! The New Pro & Mate now come with replaceable batteries.
  4. Peerless TrackR Quartz Blue Ballpoint Pen:  This gadget is on my list this year. I think it would be a great addition to my gadget collection. Please tell Santa this is a must-have! The Cross Peerless TrackR was designed for those who want to enjoy the luxury of a Cross pen without the worry of it getting lost, left behind, or stolen. Within it is a tracking device that lets you keep tabs on your pen’s whereabouts through a suite of tracking features. It also comes with a lifetime mechanical guarantee!
  5. Anker 10W Wireless Charger, Qi-Certified Wireless Charging Pad: This is one of the best gadgets ever! No more cords for me when I need to charge my iPhone X. Fast charge mode enables wireless charging up to two times faster. (Metal attachments or credit cards will interfere with charging.) Some of its unique features are as follows: LED indicators, non-slip pad, temperature control, surge protection, and more!
  6. iRobot Roomba 780:  Be productive at home and do other things you’d rather be doing than vacuuming! We fondly call our Roomba “Alice,” like the housekeeper from The Brady Bunch. Now if only we had a real Alice! The features of the Roomba: iAdapt multi-room navigation uses a full suite of sensors to navigate and adapt to your changing home; room-to-room cleaning with the included Virtual Wall Lighthouse beacons; three-stage cleaning system agitates, brushes, and suctions floors; conveniently scheduled up to seven times per week or just press Clean on the robot; automatically docks and recharges.
  7. AirFly: Wish you could listen to in-flight TV with your AirPods? Want to hear the gym cardio machine’s TV audio with your wireless headphones? Now you can, thanks to AirFly – a tiny device that connects wireless headphones to wired-audio jacks on planes, in fitness center, and anywhere else wired headphones were previously required. Just pair your wireless headphones with AirFly, plug it into the headphone jack, and you’re ready. It’s just that easy! AirFly stays charged for eight hours and includes a USB charging cable and travel pouch. The built-in battery lasts up to eight hours and recharges via USB.
  8. Apple AirPods: I love to do away with cords when I can. The Apple AirPods made it into my gadget collection this past summer. I was looking for a good option to monitor live audio during a job without a cord hanging from my ear. I used the AirFly to connect to my writer, which it did fine. Unfortunately, at this time they are unusable for this purpose because of audio feedback.  That being said, the AirPods are an amazing product and hopefully one day the technology can work for monitoring of audio during the deposition. These earbuds can be used for when I want to edit over the lunch hour or on breaks and I wish to spot-check my audio.  They are slim and quite unobtrusive. No one can even tell I have them in! They can be used with all your devices. After a one-tap setup, the AirPods are automatically on and always connected. You will get up to five hours of listening time on one charge.
  9. HGM-2 Microphone: This handy little microphone is packed with lots of features and has extreme pickup range and quality in addition to a built-in battery tester. The court reporter who has this mic can be assured you will have a worry-free day of crystal clear audio.  The HGM-2 utilizes a high-power battery that lasts 600 hours and allows the microphone to actually track voices up to 75 feet away while filtering out background noise. I use this microphone attached to my Luminex so that I can monitor audio live for those low-talking witnesses and attorneys!
  10. Amazon Echo Dot: I received the Echo Dot last year. It truly has a wide variety of uses and can be used throughout your office or home. Echo Dot is a hands-free, voice-controlled device that uses Alexa to play music, control smart home devices, make calls, send and receive messages, provide information, read the news, set alarms, read audiobooks from Audible, control Amazon Video on Fire TV, and more. When editing my transcripts, I ask Alexa to verify spellings for me so that I don’t have to take my hands off the keyboard; thus, making me much more productive. If a court reporter can keep their hands on the keyboard, it saves time and effort for sure. Other uses for the Echo Dot are as follows: Connects to speakers or headphones through Bluetooth or 3.5 mm stereo cable to play music from Amazon Music, Spotify, Pandora, iHeartRadio, and TuneIn. Apple Music is coming mid-December! Play music simultaneously across Echo devices and speakers connected via cable with multi-room music. There are many skills available for Alexa. If you want to find out if you or your children are on Santa’s Naughty or Nice list, enable the skill on Alexa and find out quickly!
  11. Peeps: This gadget is another one that is on my Wish List! It’s gotten rave reviews online. It’s a revolutionary and patented invisible carbon formula that safely and easily cleans your glasses, leaving your lenses as clean as the day you got them. This gadget is compact, lightweight, and pocket-sized, which makes it a perfect companion for travel! Unlike disposable chemical-filled wipes, the carbon technology is all natural.

There you have it — my Top Gadgets for the Holidays 2018.  Happy gifting! Oh, and remember to pick up a little something for yourself while you’re shopping.

NCRA Webinar Scheduled: There’s an app for that!

October 26, 2018 By Lynette Mueller Leave a Comment

A mere eight years ago, we were always asking, “Is there an app for that?” Today, though, apps are an integral part of our work life and we now ask, “Which apps are best?”

NCRA has invited me to share with our members a 60-minute presentation on the best apps for court reporters. Mark your calendars for December 3rd and plan to attend! Look for details from NCRA soon.

My top five reasons to use apps:

  1. Productivity
  2. Solve Problem/Issue
  3. Embrace technology = client retention and look like a rock star
  4. Great customer service by providing thing clients come to expect
  5. Mobile society – keep going no matter where you are

A sneak peek of some of my favorites:

Deliveries
Google Maps
Dropbox
Voice Recorder

And many more . . .

Finally, I want to encourage everyone who loves The Voice to download their app and follow all the vocalists. It’s an awesome program. This year it’s even more cool for me because there’s a young lady named Reagan Strange (14 years old) who has made it through to the Knockouts and she’s on Adam Levine’s team! My husband and I have known Reagan since she was seven years old. She arrived at our home to have her headshot taken by my photographer husband. After the photo shoot, I remember so vividly that she came down the back staircase of our home and asked me if I would like to hear her sing. Man, I was blown away!

Please follow Reagan Strange with me on this next phase of her musical journey. You won’t be disappointed!

The Voice App for iOS

The Voice App for Android

Follow Reagan on social media and let’s get her amazing personality and voice to go viral:

Rocketbook for Court Reporters

July 18, 2017 By Lynette Mueller Leave a Comment

The 2017 NCRA Convention and Expo in Las Vegas is drawing near, which has me reflecting upon past conventions and the knowledge base I gained from them.  The Rocketbook was introduced to me by an awesome court reporter colleague, Lisa Knight, and it has proven to be a valuable productivity tool for me lately.

As a freelance court reporter in Memphis, Tennessee, depositions, sworn statements, hearings, and court trials are just a few of the proceedings that my clients need me to take the verbatim proceedings down. For each job I create a job sheet, as most court reporters do I imagine.  That job sheet is our bible for each deposition or other verbatim proceedings we need to transcribe at a future date. The job sheets include things like the date, start time, location, attorneys present, witness name, and case caption. Of course I also include any exhibits I marked and any spellings that I asked the witness or client for as well.

In the past, I used a legal pad for my job sheets and, then, filed them away in a storage cabinet. With the Rocketbook, the need for all that paper is a thing of the past! Utilizing the Rocketbook saves me time, boosts my productivity, organization, and gives me flexibility in how I work on the go.

As a busy freelance court reporter, I do travel to different cities across the county when my clients need me. When I do have the occasion to travel, go on vacation, or if I go spend time with my children, of course I take advantage of downtime to work on editing transcripts.  Because my job sheets are now digitized, there’s no need to carry the hard-copy job sheets when I’m away from my office.

What is Rocketbook? According to their website:

The Rocketbook Wave provides the freedom of a traditional pen and paper notebook, while instantly blasting your notes into the cloud using your smartphone.

When you use Pilot FriXion pens with the Wave notebook, you can erase your notes using your microwave oven and reuse your notebook.  Available in 2 sizes – each book comes with one pen.

There are many cool features of the Rocketbook:

  • The QR code on the bottom of each page ensures that your pages are always in chronological order.
  • The image processing is crisp and clean — maybe even better than the original!
  • The symbols on the bottom of each page lets you send your job sheets to the location you designate within the app: Evernote, box, email, Dropbox, Google Drive, the Cloud, OneNote, Slack.
  • Works with Pilot FriXion pens only. The pens come in in different colors and different tip styles.  Choose one that matches your personality!
  • The iOS app is always in Airplane Mode, which means if you’re like me you can edit on the go on your airplane travels too! (As of July 2017, Rocketbook’s blog advises that a new and updated iOS app is coming soon.)
  • You may erase and reuse your Rocketbook five times.
  • Use your microwave to erase and reuse. You do need a turntable in your microwave.  If you have a model like mine with no turntable, just purchase a Nordic Ware Microwave Micro-Go-Round 10 inch for the workaround.

How does one use the Rocketbook?

  1. Purchase the Rocketbook and Pilot FriXion of your choice.  I have the Wave and love it! Check out my Gadgets page for a link to purchase on Amazon.
  2. Set up the smartphone app by connecting your email, Evernote, box, Dropbox applications to match the symbols on the bottom of each page.
  3. Start creating your job sheet on the first page of your notebook as you normally would.
  4. After the job and you return to the office, use the smartphone app to scan your page. Place an X on the particular symbol at the bottom of the page in which you wish to store your job sheet.
  5. Next, select Scan within the app and place your smartphone on top of your page within the grid lines. Wait for the app to auto-focus and the app will automatically take a pic.
  6. Now tap on the scan of the page and it will become larger. At the bottom of the scan, you will see the symbol that you selected earlier is green.
  7. Tap on the green symbol and all your connected cloud accounts and connected email will display.
  8. You may choose at this time to select all of your connected accounts if you wish by tapping next to each option.
  9. Then select Sync All.
  10. The next screen allows you the option to give your job sheet a special file name before it syncs. Do so now.
  11. Finally, tap Send and you’re done!

I would love to hear if anyone else is using this digital notebook and your experiences with it. This is so easy to use.  All you need to do is CREATE, SCAN, and ERASE!

Technology is great!
